Photographing the Dramatic Landscape of Iceland.
Ben Willmore has spent time exploring Iceland for the last few years and will be returning one more time before flying in for this workshop. There's something about the other-worldly landscape and rich culture that keeps pulling him back.
Ben believes that the impulse to lift your camera and press the shutter button is trigged when something emotionally draws you into a scene, and it is compelling enough that you want to share it with others. In this workshop you'll learn how to better express your vision and how to digitally optimize your images in such a way that anyone who views it will be attracted to the same qualities that drew you into the scene (and that's not a common result). You'll learn how you can control where a viewer will look first, what they'll explore next and how to prevent them from being distracted from areas that do not contribute to the message of your image. You'll learn how to use composition and exclusion to best present a three-dimensional landscape in a two-dimensional print. You'll also see how your initial capture is just raw material and how you can fully realize its potential through sophisticated digital optimizations.
Your camera should become a finely tuned extension of your brain, and Ben will help you develop your brain-to-camera connective tissue. You should learn to intuitively choose the optimal combination of ISO, shutter speed, aperture and focus point. This should become as natural as tying your shoe or driving your car, and can only come from fully mastering the concepts available and practicing them until you no longer have to think about them. We might not be able to achieve perfection during this event, but we'll surely get in the right direction and show you how to progress toward transcending the mechanical limitations and moving toward the photographic and artistic virtuosity we all desire.
Ben has partnered with Focus on Nature's expert guides, to setup a unique combination of the best guides, comfortable and capable transportation along with a teacher who has a passion for the Icelandic landscape and is one of the top five Photoshop experts in the world. We will be visiting many areas that typical tourists are incapable of reaching. That should make for a once in a lifetime experience that you will not want to miss.
Many of Iceland's most unique and beautiful areas are not accessible by common car. To see all the country has to offer, you have to use a vehicle that is capable of fording streams and making it up steep rocky trails that are not frequented by many "tourists". In these remote areas there are few modern conveniences and you are limited to what you can carry with you. For that reason, we've contracted to use the best in transportation. A vehicle that is very capable off road, offers great visibility and brings many of the comforts of home along the way including: comfortable seating, full 12v and 220v electrical service, tables for eating and laptop use, heat even when the vehicle is not running and much more.
We use only native Icelandic guides who have been exploring the country their entire lives. They know the most hidden, unique shooting locations and will optimize our route to take advantage of the best weather and lighting available. You could not be in more capable hands.
